Energy efficiency a New Year's resolution?
In the cold winter months, reverse ceiling fans and put them on low. This will push the hot air down from the ceiling and create a more comfortable temperature in the room.
CFLs (Condescend Fluorescent Lights) are the new rage in lighting and energy efficiency. When buying CFLs, be sure to compare the lumens created and not the wattage. A 75 watt incandescent bulb (traditional bulb) will only put out half of the lumens a 75 watt CFL creates. In other words, your rooms might be a little brighter than you expected!
CFLs work best in high use areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.
Traditional incandescent bulbs are best for closets and rarely used lamps and fixtures.
CFLs emit much less heat that traditional bulbs do, so they are not effective in warming spaces, but reduce the possible burn factor making them a safer option around children.
CFLs should be
disposed of carefully. They do contain a small amount of
mercury. If you should break one, clean up is important
and do not allow children in the area until the debris is
disposed of.

My husband did a do-it- yourself job that, as usual, created an awful lot of dust and debris clean up. We thought we had done a good job, but as the weather got colder, so did our house. Finally, I called Brian from Complete Home Maintenance to find out if there was something wrong with the furnace.
Turns out the furnace was fine, but the duct work wasn't! Lots of dust and debris (and maybe a bit of dog hair!) had been pulled into the cold air returns and reduced the flow of heat through the house to almost nothing!
Brian had the duct work cleaned and immediately we noticed an incredible difference! You can actually feel the hot air rushing by you when you stand in front of a vent.
I'm looking forward to opening my next heating bill -- I'm sure it will be much better than last month!
